In 2010 there have been a significant increase in the rate of daytime housebreak activity and evening motor vehicle break-ins throughout Wilmington and surrounding cities and towns. Although several arrests have been made, these incidents continue to occur at a troubling frequency.
In many instances, suspects are targeting homes where there aren't any cars in the driveway. In some cases an individual, male or female, may come to the front door and if someone answers the doorbell, they explain that they must be at the wrong house and leave, or they may ask for someone by name that does not live there.
Residents are reminded to lock their doors when they leave their homes, and neighbors should report any unusual neighborhood activity to the Wilmington Police Department. We would much prefer checking on a suspicious car or person, than to investigate another housebreak. Simply dial 911 from your home, or 978-658-5071 from your cell phone.
Residents are also reminded to lock their cars at night, and to not leave valuables such as GPS systems, wallets, or laptops in plain sight. Incidents are sporadic and occur in almost every part of town. A locked car usually prevents an opportunistic thief from getting into the vehicle.
