Wilmington Police Honor Guard

Unit Leader:
Sgt. David McCue Jr.

The Wilmington Department established it's Honor Guard in 1987 under the direction and command of Sgt. James "Jay" T. Palmer.  The Honor Guard was formed to provide a ceremonial function at parades, funerals, and other special events.

In 1988, the Honor Guard was privileged to participate in the 100th anniversary Mass at St. Thomas of Villanova Church officiated by Cardinal Bernard Law.

In 1995 our Honor Guard had the honor of traveling to the State House to assist in the salute to American Flag as it began a tour across the country as part of a country wide celebration.

The Honor Guard has taken great pride in re-establishing an old custom of leading the Town of Wilmington's Memorial Day parade.  In the spirit of remembering those who served our country, it is an honor for us to be included in this annual ceremony.

The Honor Guard Uniform includes a french blue dress blouse jacket accented with navy blue epaulets, cuffs, and braid.  The trousers are navy blue with one inch wide french blue piping on the seams.  The dress uniform also includes a french blue shirt with a cross strap and gun belt of basket weave design.  The traditional navy blue "Nantucket" style uniform hat includes a french blue band over the brim.

"A POLICE OFFICERS PRAYER"

OH ALMIGHTY GOD,
WHOSE GREAT POWER AND ETERNAL WISDOM
EMBRACES THE UNIVERSE,
WATCH OVER ALL POLICE OFFICERS.

PROTECT THEM FROM HARM IN THE
PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTY
TO STOP CRIME, ROBBERIES, RIOTS AND VIOLENCE.

WE PRAY,
HELP THEM KEEP OUR STREETS AND HOMES
SAFE DAY AND NIGHT.

WE RECOMMEND THEM TO YOUR LOVING CARE BECAUSE
THEIR DUTY IS DANGEROUS.
GRANT THEM YOUR UNENDING STRENGTH AND
COURAGE IN THEIR DAILY ASSIGNMENTS.

DEAR GOD,
PROTECT THESE BRAVE MEN, GRANT THEM
YOUR ALMIGHTY PROTECTION.

UNITE THEM SAFELY WITH THEIR FAMILIES
AFTER DUTY HAS ENDED.

AMEN.
