The Wilmington Police take pride in the fact that we have always had a strong relationship with the youth, parents, and school systems in our community.
Many years ago, partnerships were forged that laid the groundwork for establishing successful sharing of information, training, and improving safety in our community.
As is evidenced by the many officers that have served in school liaison positions over the years at the Wilmington Police Department, it is clear that we take our role as protectors of children and their educational environment seriously.
Currently, Officer Chester "Chip" Bruce serves as the School Resource Officer (SRO) at the Wilmington Middle School. Chip has served the youth and his entire community for many years as a police officer, mentor and friend. Chip started his official role in the schools as a D.A.R.E Officer at the then West and North Intermediate Schools. He then transitioned into SRO position at the Middle School as federal funding became available, thus enabling us to increase our support role in the school system. Officer Julie Pozzi is the Wilmington Police D.A.R.E. Officer, a position she has held since September 2001. Her assignments take her between both the North and West Intermediate Schools. Julie has been dedicated to the children of Wilmington since her days as a patrol officer and is involved in many youth programs during school summer break as well.
Officer Pozzi devotes her time in the schools to the Drug Awareness Resistance Education and other risk avoidance training all the while serving as a mentor to the children she serves and providing a safe environment for them to learn in.
Officer Brian Moon is the Wilmington Police Safety Officer, and his duties consist of bus safety, monitoring and overseeing crossing guards and their posts, and bicycle safety. In addition to his traffic safety responsibilities, Officer Moon also assists the D.A.R.E./School Resource Officers in site security assessments and all-hazards planning.
Officer Moon currently also serves on the School Evacuation Planning Committee, and conducts project analysis on proposed road construction and major developments to ensure adherence to local and state safety standards.
Officer Brian Gillis is the School Resource Officer at the Wilmington High School. Brian became an SRO in 2011 after serving the beginning of his career in the Patrol Division and for ten years in the Traffic-Safety Division.
Lt. Scott Sencabaugh is the supervisor who oversees these fine Wilmington Police officers in their roles as school liaison officers. He also serves as the Unit Commander for the NEMLEC STARS Unit. The unit is responsible for responding when called, to all threats in the NEMLEC region - 51 cities/towns in northeast Massachusetts and over 500 schools.
The STARS team prides itself in local control, and is made up of members from police (local, state, & federal), fire, and public & private schools. The team provides an all hazards approach to threat mitigation and response, school safety training, and incident pre-planning in the communities served.
